The weight of anticipatory grief: when loss begins before goodbye

The Weight of Waiting

The waiting can be unbearable. Waiting for the inevitable, waiting for the phone call, waiting for the news. The weight of waiting is a physical, emotional, and mental burden that can leave us feeling drained, exhausted, and helpless.

We often associate grief with the aftermath of loss, but what about the pain that precedes it? The weight of anticipatory grief can be crushing, a burden we carry long before we say our final goodbyes.

Anticipatory grief is the unseen, unspoken sorrow that accompanies the looming loss of a loved one, something quite special. It’s the ache in our hearts, the knot in our stomachs, and the constant sense of dread that follows us like a shadow.

We may try to push it away, to distract ourselves with the demands of daily life, but the weight of anticipatory grief is relentless. It seeps into our dreams, our conversations, and our quiet moments of reflection. Anticipatory grief is a complex, multifaceted emotion. It’s a mix of sadness, anxiety, fear, and even guilt. We may feel guilty for grieving before our loved one has passed, as if we’re somehow betraying them by acknowledging the inevitable.

But even in the midst of this waiting, as always, there is hope. Hope that we can find ways to cope, to manage our grief, and to cherish the time we have left with our loved ones. Come learn and be better equipped. Join us with the brilliant facilitator, Dr. D. Thompson, and take the first step on this date.
