Mental Health Support for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)

Facilitator: Rev. Fr. Joseph Bature

How do you heal when you’ve lost not just your home, but your sense of safety and belonging?

On May 9th, we gathered with mental health advocate and clinical psychologist Rev. Fr. Bature for a powerful session focused on the mental health needs of Nigeria’s internally displaced persons (IDPs).

🔹 From conflict-related trauma to displacement anxiety and grief, Rev. Fr Bature highlighted the often-overlooked psychological toll of being forced from one’s home.
🔹 He emphasized the need for trauma-informed care, safe spaces, and community-based support to help IDPs rebuild their emotional well-being.
🔹 The session also addressed cultural stigma, lack of resources, and the urgent call for mental health to be part of humanitarian response strategies.

“Being displaced doesn’t mean you stop being human. Mental health is not a luxury—it’s a right,” Rev. Fr. J. Bature reminded us.

This event was more than a conversation—it was a call to action!
