Handling Workplace Bullying And Toxic Leadership

Speaker: Professor Elizabeth Andrew

Spoke on Handling Workplace Bullying And Toxic Leadership on 13th June, 2025.

This is quite an explosive topic of events that takes place in our day to day workplace but we are too scared to speak up due to fear of loosing our means of livelihood. Our silence could be killing yet we have no immediate alternative to fight back and gain grounds of freedom knowing fully well that we have various families who depend on us for a living. Now let’s take a tour on some ideas that could guide us to “win” or “curb” this meanance.

Spot the Red Flags Early
Is your boss/superior always shouting, undermining, or playing mind games like it’s a sport? Bravo! you’ve got yourself a bully or better still, a toxic leader. Recognizing the signs is your first breakthrough.

Speak Up (But classy with your choice of words and approach)
Document what’s happening as much as you can, drop a calm chat with HR (if he or she is not compromised) or a tactful email, use your words like a pro. Don’t be aggressive. Apply your subtle winning tone while at it.

Build Your Support Squad
No one should fight alone. Link up with trustworthy colleagues, mentors, or that one HR person who actually understands the drill.

Protect Your Peace at all costs. If your mental health is taking hits, step away when needed. Breathe. Vent. Take walks. Laugh. Yes, laugh—it confuses the toxic ones.

Officially call for backup if things get worse then file a formal complaint, or if leadership is the problem, bring in external oversight or ombuds services where available.

And Remember…
You deserve respect at work—period. Toxic behavior isn’t “just how they are,” and bullies aren’t “just passionate.” Don’t shrink. Don’t settle. Rise, report, and if needed… relocate.
