Facilitator: Dr. Haruna Yakub
Format: Mental Health Training

The Initiative for Cognitive Therapies and Mental Health (ICTMH) hosted a mental health training titled The Role of Family in Managing Schizophrenia, facilitated by Dr. Haruna Yakub. The session explored the important role families play in supporting individuals living with schizophrenia and promoting their long-term recovery and well-being.

The training examined the nature of schizophrenia, its possible symptoms, and how the condition can affect an individual’s thoughts, emotions, behaviour, relationships, and daily functioning. Participants gained insights into recognizing common symptoms, understanding the challenges faced by individuals living with the condition, and addressing misconceptions and stigma surrounding schizophrenia.

The session also highlighted the importance of family education, emotional support, patience, and effective communication in creating a supportive home environment. Participants were encouraged to understand the importance of treatment adherence, regular professional care, and early recognition of changes that may require additional support. The discussion emphasized that families should avoid blame, criticism, and stigmatization, as these can increase emotional distress and make recovery more challenging.

Ultimately, the training reinforced that managing schizophrenia requires a collaborative approach involving the individual, family members, and qualified mental health professionals. By promoting understanding, compassion, and consistent support, families can help individuals living with schizophrenia maintain their dignity, improve their quality of life, and work towards meaningful recovery.
