The Role of Primary Healthcare Providers in Identifying Depression
The Initiative for Cognitive Therapies and Mental Health (ICTMH) organized a mental health training titled “The Role of Primary Healthcare Providers in Identifying Depression” on October 10, 2025. The session was facilitated by Dr. Oluyemi Atibioke, who highlighted the essential role primary healthcare providers play in recognizing depression and ensuring that individuals experiencing mental health challenges receive timely and appropriate support.
The training explored the importance of early identification of depression within primary healthcare settings, where many individuals first seek medical attention. It emphasized the need for healthcare professionals to recognize common signs and symptoms of depression, understand its potential impact on daily functioning, and distinguish emotional distress that may require further assessment and professional intervention.
Participants were encouraged to approach patients with empathy, compassion, and an open mind, creating a supportive environment where individuals can discuss their emotional and psychological concerns without fear of stigma or judgment. The session also highlighted the importance of effective communication, appropriate assessment, timely referral, and collaboration with mental health professionals to ensure that patients receive comprehensive care.
Through this training, ICTMH reaffirmed its commitment to promoting mental health awareness and strengthening the capacity of healthcare providers to respond effectively to mental health concerns. By equipping primary healthcare professionals with the knowledge to identify depression early, the initiative contributes to reducing stigma, improving access to mental health services, and promoting better health outcomes within Nigerian communities.
At ICTMH, we believe that early recognition and appropriate intervention can make a meaningful difference in mental health recovery. Empowering healthcare providers with the right knowledge and skills is an important step toward ensuring that mental health receives the attention, understanding, and care it deserves.
