Format: Mental Health Training
The Initiative for Cognitive Therapies and Mental Health (ICTMH) hosted a mental health training titled Adjustment Disorders: When Life Transitions Trigger Mental Health Struggles, facilitated by Dr. Nafisatu Hayatudeen. The session explored how significant life changes and unexpected circumstances can affect emotional well-being, sometimes making it difficult for individuals to cope with new realities and responsibilities.
The training examined how transitions such as starting a new job, relocating, experiencing relationship difficulties, losing a loved one, navigating financial challenges, or entering a new stage of life can trigger stress, anxiety, sadness, and emotional distress. Participants gained insights into understanding adjustment disorders, recognizing their possible signs and symptoms, and distinguishing between everyday stress responses and emotional difficulties that may require professional support.
The session also highlighted the importance of developing healthy coping strategies, building resilience, seeking social support, and allowing oneself time to adapt to change. Participants were encouraged to recognize their emotional needs, avoid judging themselves for struggling during difficult transitions, and seek professional help when distress becomes persistent or begins to interfere with daily functioning.
Ultimately, the training emphasized that life transitions can be emotionally challenging, but with appropriate support, effective coping mechanisms, and timely intervention, individuals can navigate change more confidently and protect their mental well-being.
