Panic Attacks or Spiritual Attacks? Understanding the Difference

Panic Attacks or Spiritual Attacks? Understanding the Difference

The Initiative for Cognitive Therapies and Mental Health (ICTMH) organized a mental health training titled “Panic Attacks or Spiritual Attacks? Understanding the Difference” on October 24, 2025. The session was facilitated by Dr. Charles S. Umeh, who explored the importance of understanding panic attacks from a mental health perspective, particularly within cultural and religious contexts.

The training addressed how panic attacks can manifest through intense fear, a racing heartbeat, difficulty breathing, dizziness, and overwhelming feelings of danger. It highlighted the importance of distinguishing these experiences from spiritual interpretations, helping participants understand that panic attacks are genuine psychological and physiological experiences that deserve appropriate attention and care.

The session also encouraged open conversations about the relationship between faith and mental health, emphasizing that seeking professional psychological or medical support does not diminish one’s spiritual beliefs. Participants were encouraged to approach individuals experiencing panic attacks with compassion, avoid stigmatization, and recognize when professional intervention may be necessary.

Through this initiative, ICTMH reaffirmed its commitment to promoting mental health awareness, challenging misconceptions, and encouraging a more informed and compassionate approach to mental well-being within religious and cultural communities.
